Wallpaper Wonder at Qvidja
The drive to Qvidja is mesmerizing. Undulating roads, wildly growing and flowering weeds by the roadside and sea bays escorting towards nature’s paradise. This is south-west Finland at its best.
Qvidja Farm is all about preserving and collaborating with nature’s many species, both above ground and underground. It is appropriate that the main manor houses Klaus Haapaniemi’s wallpapers. The owners, Saara Kankaanrinta and Ilkka Herlin, wanted to respect traditions in the interior by choosing the finest wallpapers. The animal and plant themes were exactly what was wanted to the walls of the manor. The wallpapers Equinoxe, Pheasants and Rhubarbs, Lilac, Lily of the Valley and Grasshopper remind the power of biodiversity everywhere!
Qvidja pilots many practical and scientific projects tackling climate change, energy and food production. Qvidja’s people think that change is possible – changing the agriculture is not impossible or unprofitable. By doing concrete examples, faith and hope arises. The estate was acquired hoping to leave the soil, fields and forests in better conditions for future generations and love and hope for the earth. The owners have also a very large conservation area in the Archipelago Sea. This is a deposit for the future.
The estate maximizes biodiversity by raising 58 horses, 61 sheep, 24 Highland cattle and 70 cattle. All animals take part in the ecosystem work. The butterflies and pollinators are present. Finland’s largest protected butterfly species, Apollo (Parnassius apollo) thrives here and flight routes for the butterflies are taken into consideration. A native species of bees the European dark bee (Apis mellifera mellifera) is on the grounds, too.
No wonder all the butterflies, grasshoppers, insects and plants feel at home on the walls of Qvidja!
